Maurice James, Director of Foris Horticultural Limited has extensive experience working in different horticultural environments such as parks, education establishments, private estate, and domestic and commercial properties since 1993. Maurice has acquired a very broad experience in developing, establishing and managing various horticultural environments.
Maurice is currently the Estates Grounds Manager at a University in the south of England, where the grounds are presented to meet the needs of students, staff and visitors alike. The university grounds have been awarded ‘Best Grounds’ and were finalist for ‘Best Garden or Arboretum’ in the national ‘Horticulture Week Custodian Awards’ in 2019, and became a Green Flag Award winner in 2024.
Having trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, Maurice worked within this industry for a number of years before deciding a different direction in career, inspired by the ‘Gardeners World’ presenter Geoff Hamilton.
Working in landscaping for several years developing his skills and experience with hard materials and the ‘softer’ side of this profession (including some nursery work), he moved into gardening with its many additional softer aspects of horticulture and the variety of different associated challenges. Training and study enhanced his skills and knowledge that supported his progression into more senior roles.
Throughout this time, he has continued to use his original training as an artist to produce garden designs for clients and places where employed.
Hard and soft landscaping and garden design are all allied to a sensitive and minimal impact approach that Maurice adopts towards nature and biodiversity.
Maurice is a full member of The Professional Garden Consultants' Association, The Professional Gardeners' Guild, The Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and The Gardeners' Guild. He is also a Green Flag Award judge.
Enlisting the support of a Garden Consultant offers the benefit of professional advice and guidance on many aspects and levels within the garden or estate. This can ultimately be more cost effective than employing a Garden Designer or Landscape Architect.
Consultations could be a discussion for an hour or two that can provide the direction or inspiration you may need to move forward with a goal or resolve a problem. It could also be more involved with a site assessment and management plans contained in a report. It is entirely reliant on the Client brief.
Before booking a visit, we will send a Client Pre-Site Visit Questionnaire for completion. This will help us gain an understanding of your needs and to tailor the site visit to best suit you - and most importantly, to ascertain whether we are right for you. Along with the questionnaire, a Statement of Professional Charges will be attached.
